Local piano prodigy: SAMRO and Hennie Joubert prizewinner, Mike Wang (11) to perform for Classical Sounds
Helderberg Classical Sounds is proud to treat its audience with a performance by local piano virtuoso, Mike Wang (11) a Grade 6 learner at Hendrik Louw Primary School, Strand. This young prodigy, originally from China, started with piano lessons at the age of 5 and after moving to South Africa in 2015, studies under Dr. Mario Nell.
Wang has been awarded numerous prizes, such as the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod prize for Best 10 year old participant, the Bach trophy, the best Classical Sonata, the best South African work as well as the overall best pianist in the Primary School section. In 2017, he made his debut as soloist with the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra and have been invited to perform as soloist with the Cape Town Youth Orchestra as well as performing for the Oude Libertas Summer Concert Series in 2018.
Wang’s recital forms part of the Classical Sounds Concert series held at the Helderberg Dutch Reformed Church, where he will be performing repertoire by Bach, Haydn, Liszt and Chopin. The concert will take place on Sunday, 8 April at 16:00 – 17:00 in the church building. Entrance is free but donations for the further development of local musical talent, is welcome.
